Now, a recent study analyzed the role of glutamate, which is a neurotransmitter, in the hippocampus. Some studies have indicated a link between glutamate and anxiety. Glutamate is a powerful excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain.
The team of this new study found that glutamate activity’s reduction increased anxious behavior, and glutamate levels with the hippocampus of the animals. Hippocampus is a brain area which plays a key role in managing emotions and memory. The researchers explained that animals response was less anxious to psychological tests after their glutamate levels reached normal levels.
Scientists suggest that targeting the hippocampal-area 25 pathway could help invent pharmaceutical interventions in the future. The team came to this conclusion after analyzing the role of brain areas 25 and 32.
“These findings provide casual evidence in primates that hippocampal glutamatergic hypofunction regulates endogenous high-trait anxiety, and the hippocampal-area 25 circuit is a potential therapeutic target,” the authors of the study concluded.
